Faith in the New Day is a sentiment that I have wanted to express through my music for quite some time. It’s finally happened in large part with my faith in all of those involved in this project. Their contributions were invaluable . Each new day presents a new opportunity to move forward in any direction. Welcome this opportunity. Faith does not grow unless it’s challenged. Expect these challenges because they will come. Keep the Faith.

I’m going to assume that you, the listener, no longer need me to tell you what an amazing bass player my dad is. All you have to do is listen to recordings he’s played on throughout his career and his previous two solo releases. However, I can’t help but be so incredibly impressed with his prolific writing and arranging skills. Those skills just seem to continue to evolve on this, his third recording as a leader. Transcendent composers write singable, memorable melodies that capture the ears and imaginations of both the jazz connoisseur and the casual listener. With songs like “Child’s Play,” Lo Siento,” “Faith in the New Day” and “Roll Call” I certainly think he fits the bill of a transcendent composer. Oh, and by the way, lest we forget, he’s really killin’ it on the bass, too!

Recorda Me - A soulful and sultry interpretation of this beloved Joe Henderson standard in 6/4 meter with Lee’s signature harmonies between the three “horns” out front (Alto Flute, Flugelhorn, Soprano Sax). Solos by Tim Warfield and myself. Also featuring the percussion genius of Daryl Burgee and Doc Gibbs.
Faith in the New Day - a Lee Smith original. Mixed meters, challenging chord changes and of course Lee’s unique way of writing for the three “horns” out front (Alto Flute, Trumpet and Soprano Sax). Solos by me, Nasir Dickerson, Joe Magnarelli and Lee Smith.
