Review of Siora
Siora on Encounter Records 1997
Review by: Lee Prosser Copyright© 2002 JazzReview.com®. All Rights Reserved.
Musicians: Dan Kleiman, keyboards, piano, composer, leader; Phyllis Chapell, vocals, guitar; Marc Adler, flute; Chico Huff, bass; Steve Holloway, drums; Larry Marshall, percussion; Pablo Batista, percussion.
SIORA is world music with deep jazz influences at its best, full of life, full of vigor, and full of sensitivity. This is a 9 song collection that captures the essence of contemporary world jazz with a sweet blend of Brazilian, and international motifs.
Songs include "Libre," "Canto de Ossanha," "Solitaire," "Paramour," "Agoniza, Mas Nao Morre," "Points of You," "Under Paris Skies," "Canyon Grand," and "Willy's Theme."
Phyllis Chapell has a lovely voice with a three-octave range and sings in eight languages. Her guitar work and voice compliment the exquisite piano stylings of Dan Kleiman whose "Points of You" composition is a showpiece for the collection and highlights the excellent harmony of the group as a unit. For those who remember the early jazz recordings of pianist Peter Nero, you will have a nice connection with some of the wonderful piano musings of Dan Kleiman. Kleiman is one of the best contemporary jazz pianists performing today. There is much to admire and like about SIORA, including brilliant solo work and group harmony. Chico Huff's bass performances shine beautifully as does his intricate composition "Solitaire." Marc Adler excels on flute in every song. Every musician on this CD collection is in top form. SIORA is a fine recording. It is full of life. SIORA is enjoyable entertainment for jazz listeners. Artist's Website: http://www.siorajazz.com
